How to close and create a MMC service area

Summary

Fabasoft MMC services uses the file system to save multimedia contents (documents). Every MMC service can manage multiple MMC service areas, whereby one MMC service area needs to be set as the active area.

An MMC service area refers to an entry point, which is the "root" directory for the area.

In this article we explain how to correctly close an MMC service area and create a new MMC service area.

Information

Please follow these steps to close an Fabasoft MMC service area and create a new MMC service area.

Notice: It's mandatory to create a new area if you close the current active area, so documents can be stored fluently.

Create a MMC service area

Notice: You should first create the new area before closing the old one..

  • Edit the desired MMC service object in the Services tab in the Fabasoft Domain Administration .
  • Create a new line in the MMC service areas aggregate.
  • In the MMC service area form set a descriptive name for the new area.
  • Set Start Point (UTC) to a future date. So the earliest date for the new area is the date of tomorrow .
  • Leave the End Point (UTC)) empty.
  • Choose the Type for the new area:
    • Content Addressed Storage (CAS) is the standard type which organises documents by the content hash. This type supports Single Instance Content Store and Splitpoints.
    • One Directory per Day (Change Date) is used for compatibility reasons and organises documents by the change date. Single Instance Content Store and Splitpoints are not supported with this storage type.
  • Leave the Change Mode in the state All Operations .
  • Set Log Changes to Yes .
  • Enter the Directory on Server . This is the entry point for this area. If you enter multiple directories, all documents are stored in every directory (like mirroring).
  • The additional properties are not mandatory to create the new area. For information about these properties see the Fabasoft White Paper "Content Addressed Storage.pdf" on the Fabasoft DVD.
  • Click Next to finish the input.

Closing a MMC service area

  • Edit the desired MMC service object in the Services tab in the Fabasoft Domain Administration .
  • Open the line of the desired area you want to close.
  • Set End Point (UTC) to a future ate. So the earliest date to close the area is the date of tomorrow .
Important: If you have created a new area as described before, use the same date to close the area.
  • As long as this area is active leave the Change Mode in All Operations . Change the state to Read Only or Read and Delete Only not until the new area is active.
  • Click Next to finish the input.

To commit the changes press Apply or Next .

When the new MMC service area got active (starting with the Start Point (UTC) ) you can set the Change Mode of the closed area to Read Only or Read and Delete Only .

Further information

  • If documents stored in a closed area with Change mode set to Read Only or Read and Delete Only are changed (edited), the changed document will be saved in the current active area and an object version will be created automatically. This automatism of creating an object version is by design and cannot be disabled.
  • If documents stored in a closed area with Change mode still set to All Operations are changed (edited), the changed document will be saved in the closed area .
  • Never change the Start Point (UTC) and End Point (UTC) of already used areas. This will mess up the document organisation and can lead to inconsistency or even to data loss.
  • Never use the current date (today) to close or start a new area. This will mess up the document organisation and can lead to inconsistency or even to data loss. Always use future dates.
  • The End Point (UTC) of the closed area and the Start Point (UTC) of the new area needs to be the same date. Background: The date is saved in UTC, meaning 01.02.2011 is recognized as "01.02.2011 0:00". If you would create the new area with the date of the following day, you would have a time gap of 1 day without active area.
