Fabasoft Reference Architecture in a Microsoft Windows Environment

The success of a company in the global marketplace is based on the use of information and communication technology. Companies that have already converted their business processes to E-Business are dependent on the availability of their IT systems.

Technology for achieving higher availability and fault-tolerant systems has evolved considerably over the past few years. That is why Fabasoft developed a Reference Architecture to ensure that the necessary availability, performance, stability and scalability can be maintained during production. This book presents the architecture for high-available online services, an architecture that represents the current state of the art implemented using the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system.

On the one hand it gives readers a detailed description of the functionality of all subsystems in the Fabasoft Reference Architecture, the client workstations for example, various network components, load balancer, Web server farm, backend server cluster, through to storage systems, and so on.

On the other hand it outlines how each of these subsystems can be deployed for high availability and which factors need to be taken into account regarding performance. A high degree of fault tolerance for the overall system is achieved because each of the subsystems is covered in such detail.

In addition to the redundant implementation of systems components further activities are needed to achieve high availability. To this end the book goes on to describe further system-critical issues in the context of high availability such as backup and recovery, operations management and system management.

The Authors

Helmut Fallmann studied information technology at Johannes Kepler University Linz. Helmut Fallmann and Leo Bauernfeind are the founders of Fabasoft (1988) and the members of the board at Fabasoft AG. The Reference Architecture was primarily designed by Mr. Fallmann.

Oliver Albl completed his studies at HTBLA Leonding - EDP & Organisation Department. He has been employed at Fabasoft since 1991. Oliver Albl is currently the manager of Professional Services Infrastructure and is responsible, among other things, for the design and implementation of system infrastructure within Fabasoft projects. Oliver Albl is a certificated Project Manager (IPMA Level C).

Christoph Jerschitz completed his studies at HTBLA Leonding - EDP & Organisation Department. He has been employed at Fabasoft since September 2003. His current responsibilities involve the collation and analysis of customer-specific infrastructure scenarios concerning the Fabasoft Performance Lab and technical consulting. He is a certified Project Manager (IPMA Level C).

Robert Hell completed his studies at HTBLA Leonding - EDP & Organisation Department. He has been employed at Fabasoft since September 2002. Robert Hell managed the Fabasoft Abilities Lab where Fabasoft Products are tested regarding stability, manageability, performance and scalability in the Fabasoft Reference Architecture.
